Biodynamics
Biodynamic agriculture is a way of living, working and relating to nature and the plants and animals in your care. It requires a conscientious approach to our surroundings, an awareness of the unique make-up and behaviour of each environment and a willingness to develop our awareness and practices in keeping with the natural rhythms that dictate life on earth.
A holistic approach to each farm, biodynamic farming and gardening regards the soil, and even the farm itself, as living organisms. The maintenance of the soil is a high priority within this farming method which seeks to preserve the soil for future generations. Biodiveristy strives to encourage the evolution of each farm into an individual, self-contained entity.
Soil quality can be improved by applying a number of basic biodynaminc principles, including:
- applying sufficient organic manure and compost in a paramount state of fermentation
- employing effective crop rotation
- protecting crops against the elements (such as wind)
- utilising green manure
- avoiding monocultures by creating areas of diverse crop combinations
- mixing plants according to their own specific likes and dislikes
- organising tasks according an astronomical calendar
Biodynamic farming practices are based on common-sense and self-sustainablility and require a willingness to learn and develop on the behalf of the practitioner. By observing the details of how plants and animals react to our activities we can develop an indepth understanding of how the eco-system of our particular farm operates and thereby develop better practices to ensure the health of all aspects within that system.
