Puppies
Biscuit
Biscuit is the latest, unplanned addition to our little pack on Mpetu. He came to us from our friends, thanks to a couple of their seven (yes, seven) dogs that had a little clandestine affair while no one was looking. He was the only one of his litter and is truly the only one of his kind. His mother, Emma, is a little Chihuahua cross Jack Russell and her father, Solo, is a Cairn Terrier... and Biscuit is just Biscuit. He has a curly Chihuahua tail which is too long for his body and wags him off his feet on regular occasions, while his fur is all terrier.
This little Terrier is the cutest creature I’ve ever had the pleasure of living with! Ever since he was a tiny puppy, he’s had an unerring independence and enjoys exploring and playing alone. Biscuit is currently in his teenage years so completely smitten with Yulara. Even though he is still a proper dog, while Peakay has been castrated (for our sanity), he has
never challenged Peakay’s top dog spot.
Biscuit loves silly games with very small bits of fluff – he also loves climbing in buckets, hiding in places that Yulara can’t reach him and digging on the beach. He is an obsessive marker and will run the full length of the beach simply to pee on a log. Biscuit is the only one of our dogs that is really comfortable with the horses – perhaps because they were here before he arrived – and will lick their noses when given the opportunity and has even ridden Dougal (brave little soul).
For many years before the arrival of Biscuit, I had been saying that I wanted a cute, fuzzy terrier-type puppy that was small enough to ride horses with me but not a lap dog type. I firmly believe my prayers were heard and that Biscuit was manufactured just for me, although he very much belongs to all of us in the family.
Yulara
Yulara is the only bitch in our pack and also the only one with anything resembling breeding. Although not registered, Yulara is an Australian Cattle Dog – something we can be sure of not only because of the unmistakeable coat, but also from the character. Yulara will chase sticks and run all day! She loves water, she loves games, she loves walk – she just loves! Every morning, Yulara goes on a lap of the garden, wagging and squeaking to any living thing she meets along the way – even the pigs get full French kisses. When the horses come in for breakfast in the morning, Yulara will be there wagging and squeaking her very unique greeting. She will play with anything and anyone but she will only lie down for Colin!
As the name of the breed indicates, these dogs were bred on the cattle ranches of Australia and it is from the five years Colin spent over there that he became familiar with the breed and developed the ambition to own one. She’s gregarious, noisy, fast, enthusiastic and energetic and couldn’t live anywhere smaller than this! She also licks a lot and very wetly and loves charging the two terriers and pouncing on them. She is, however, also very sweet and gentle and will, we hope, make a wonderful mother when her time comes.
