Volunteer Projects
The Projects
Peas on Earth offers volunteers the chance to develop new skills and experience life on a South African small-holding in one of the most beautiful, untouched areas of this diverse country. Based on the Wild Coast, Peas on Earth is in the malaria free province of the Eastern Cape.
Peas on Earth aims to farm holistically, applying techniques of biodynamic and astrological farming to rehabilitate Mpetukop Farm, its soil and its own unique ecosystem.
In keeping with these goals, we have both animals and plants on the land, rotating and providing one another with a mutually beneficial ecosystem which supports a diversity of species with the aim of improving the soil for future generations.
As a result of this diversity, Peas on Earth is able to offer volunteers a range of areas on which to focus their skills and efforts. Of course, should a volunteer have no particular preference, we will be happy to involve them in all aspects of both farm and business.
We recommend that volunteers select a minimum of two specific areas of interest on application.
Accommodation etc.
Volunteers work in exchange for food and accommodation only.
Volunteers are expected to stay for a minimum of two weeks and to work eight hours a day from Monday to Friday. In exchange, we will provide three meals a day, plus accommodation in our farmhouse for the full week, including Saturday and Sunday should volunteers choose to stay on the farm for the weekend. Voluteers do not work for monetary gain. We will also collect volunteers from any location in the central East London area, the airport, or from Buccanneers Backpackers in Cintsa. We will also provide transport to these locations on your departure. The transfer fee is including in the program charge.
Accommodation is provided inside our old farmhouse and is dependent on the facilities available at the time. You may need to share a room with another volunteer.
Volunteers will be expected to pay for their own alcoholic beverages and other cool drinks; extra activities; internet and fuel for additional transport.
Peas on Earth is a WWOOF host and as such strive to be responsible, happy hosts!Horse care & equine management
Peas on Earth own a number of horses and volunteers choosing this option will be exposed to the following activities and associated skills:
Basic horse care, including care of foals and other young stock
Natural horsemanship including the application of Monty Robert’s join-up technique (familiar to many as the art of horse whispering)
Grazing & land management
Common ailments and homeopathic/herbal treatments
Hoof care, basic trimming and maintenance
Backing and starting young horses
Using natural horsemanship techniques to retrain horses.
While there is some opportunity to ride on the farm, Peas on Earth will also endeavour to ensure volunteers keen to ride get at least one opportunity to ride on neighbouring farms. There are also two qualified instructors in the area and volunteers are welcome to organize lessons for themselves, although this will involve an additional fee.
